‘I myself am an Israelite!’ (Romans 11.1): The Apostle Paul in 2021
with Paula Fredriksen

This lecture will be conducted via Zoom

As knowledge of Paul’s social world has altered, so have reconstructions of the apostle’s mission and message. How did Paul think about the differences between Jews and non-Jews? (The key word here is ethnicity.) What kind of Jewish world did he inhabit? (The key word here is variety.) How did Paul process his experience of the risen Christ? (The key word here is apocalyptic.) How ‘monotheistic’ was ancient Jewish monotheism? (The key idea here is, It wasn’t.) Together in this lecture we will explore the ways in which current research on these four questions has led to a rethinking of Paul’s Jewish identity and of his concept of redemption in Christ.

Paula Fredriksen, the Aurelio Professor of Scripture emerita at Boston University, since 2009 has been Distinguished Visiting Professor of Comparative Religion at the Hebrew University, Jerusalem. A fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, she has published widely on the social and intellectual history of ancient Christianity, and on pagan-Jewish-Christian relations in the Roman Empire. Her two latest books, Paul: The Pagans’ Apostle (2017), and When Christians Were Jews (2018), place the Jesus movement’s Jewish messianic message within the wider world of ancient Mediterranean culture, politics, and power.

This virtual presentation is Co-Sponsored by Rev. George Balasko and is part of the Annual Nostra Aetate Lecture Series
